Project C07 (2012–2016)
Early Modernities in East Asia: Current Debates on the Origins of Modernity
Based on the example of Asia and particularly Japan, the project seeks to investigate the theoretical and political implications inherent in the Special Research Project’s central problem, i.e. the question of the dynamics of change in pre-modern cultures of knowledge. The project will examine how and to what extent current constructions and functionalisations of the origins of modernity rest on fundamental assumptions on the nature of pre-modern epistemological change.
