This project will examine the innovative aspects of the ‘encyclopaedic’ compilations of Oribasius, Aetius and Paul and compare these to other systematic medical compendia such as Celsus’ On Medicine, Pliny’s Natural history, Caelius Aurelianus’ Acute and Chronic Affections and Alexander of Tralles’ Therapeutics. It will also compare these compendia to similar compilatory works in other disciplines in late antiquity.
